MOTOTRBO radios will produce a number of alert tones that provide an indication to the user about various activities. These alert tones can be configured to some degree in the CPS or RM. These below settings can all be found in the General Settings set in a radio codeplug/configuration. A repeater does not produce alert tones and therefore these will not be found in a repeater codeplug/configuration. The following settings are available:[1]

Disable All Alert Tones

Enabling (ticking) this turns off all the alert tones the radio will produce.

Escalert Tone

Enabling (ticking) this will make the radio generate an alert tone that progressively increases in volume until the user acknowledges this by pressing a button or answering the incoming call. The alert will only sound where a ringing tone is generated (e.g. call alert).

Channel Free Indication Tone

Enabling (ticking) this will make the radio generate an alert tone whenever a signal disappears from the currently selected channel. It also only works on conventional systems.

Self Test Pass Tone

Enabling (ticking) this will make the radio generate an alert tone whenever the radio switches on and the self test has passed. If the self test fails, the radio will produce a low pitched tone.

Prohibit Tone on Interrupt

Enabling (ticking) this will make the radio produce an alert tone, while the user was transmitting and the call is either pre-empted (only on Capacity Max) or interrupted (all other systems). This tells the user that they are no longer transmitting.

Talk Permit Tone

Enabling (ticking) this will make the radio generate an alert tone whenever the user presses PTT and transmission is allowed.

Volume Offset

This value sets the level of the alert tone in relation to received audio. When set to zero, the alert tone level is at the same level as received audio.

Fixed Volume

Enabling (ticking) this will make the alert tone volume fixed and independent of volume control.

RX Low Battery Interval

This sets the interval between each low battery alert that the radio sounds when in standby or receive mode.

Emergency Search Tone

Enabling (ticking) this will make the radio generate an emergency search tone that is optionally triggered whenever the radio enters emergency mode.

The search tone is sounded to allows the radio/user to be found in areas where there is poor visibility. Rescuers can find the radio by locating the source of the search tone.

Emergency Search Tone Volume

This field sets the volume of the Emergency Search Tone.

This tone is optionally sounded whenever the radio enters emergency mode and allows the radio/user to be found in areas where there is poor or no visibility.

Emergency Search Tone Speaker

This field defines on which speaker the Emergency Search Tone should be played.

This tone is optionally sounded whenever the radio enters emergency mode and allows the radio/user to be found in areas where there is poor or no visibility.

Emergency Alert Tone Duration

This field defines for how long an incoming emergency alert tone should be sounded. The alert tone is sounded whenever another user, on the same (scanned) channel or talkgroup triggers emergency.

Also see Emergency

Call Alert Tone Duration

This field defines for how long a call alert tone should be sounded whenever a Call Alert is received. The call alert tone style can be defined in the Contact List set.

Also see Call Alert

Text Message Alert Tone Duration

This field defines for how long the text message alert tone should be sounded whenever a text message is received. The text message alert tone style can be defined in the Contact List set.

ARTS Tone

This field defines how often the ARTS out of range tone should be sounded, if ARTS is used. Automatic Range Transponding Signalling (ARTS) helps radio users, on an analogue simplex channel ensure they are always within RF range of each other. ARTS does this by having all radios on the channel automatically check in with each other from time to time using an analogue burst or MDC1200.

Visual Indication (ARTS)

Setting this to on will give the user a visual indication that they are out of ARTS range. On display-model radios, this is done on the screen and via the LED. on non-display-model radios, this is done solely via the LED.

Clear Call Received

When enabled, and when privacy is used, the radio will sound an alert whenever an unencrypted call is received. This tells the user that they should not respond to this call with any sensitive information. This setting can be overriden by enabling Ignore RX Clear Call, in which case the radio will not play audio from unencrypted calls rendering this setting unneccesary.
