Microphone section in the General Settings set of a radio codeplug/Configuration.

Microphone is a section in the General Settings set which contains a collection of settings that affect the behaviour of the radio microphone(s).[1]

Microphone Selection Rule

Mic Selection Rule is a CPS/RM setting that defines the way transmit audio is routed when an external microphone is connected to a portable.

  • When set to Default and an external accessory is connected, the external microphone is always turned on, even when no accessory is connected. Do not select this option with receive only accessories.
  • When set to External PTT Only and an external accessory is connected to the radio, the external microphone is turned on when the external microphone PTT is pressed. However, the Portable PTT button is disabled. When there is no external accessory connected to the Portable, the internal microphone is always turned on. Do not select this option with receive only accessories.
  • If Mic Follow PTT is chosen and an external accessory is connected, the microphone selection depends on the PTT press. The external microphone is turned on when the external microphone PTT is pressed. The internal microphone is turned on when the Portable PTT is pressed. When there is no external accessory connected to the Portable, the internal microphone is always turned on.

Microphone Distortion Control

Microphone Distortion Control is a CPS/RM setting that, when enabled, will make the radio adjusts its microphone to match the users voice, so the transmitted audio is never distorted. This feature is applicable in Digital mode only. This field is not applicable to R7 Series radio.

Microphone AGC

Automatic Gain Control provides consistent level audio for a wide range of voice levels input. AGC is used to suppress loud audio ( with a maximum suppression of 12 dB) or boost soft audio (with a maximum boost of 3 dB) to a nominal value. When the AGC is disabled, soft spoken users may sound very soft to the receiving radios and naturally loud spoken users may be undesirably loud.

Enabling this overrides the below Microphone Gain settings. For nearly all applications, it is recommended to turn Mic AGC on. On VOX-enabled channels, disabling Mic AGC and adjusting the Accessory Mic Gain affects VOX Sensitivity.

Analogue Microphone Gain

The audio level of the transmitting radio will be amplified by the value set in this field. Enabling Microphone AGC overrides this and greys it out.

Digital Microphone Gain

The audio level of the transmitting radio will be amplified by the value set in this field. Enabling Microphone AGC overrides this and greys it out.

VOX Sensitivity

Of the six available levels, Level 1 is the most sensitive level, while level 6 is the least sensitive level.

VOX sensitivity should be configured properly to avoid situations where VOX is frequently triggered unintentionally or where it is difficult to trigger VOX. Several factors should be considered when configuring this feature, such as the type of accessory used, the environment in which the radio performs, the radio user's regular speech volume, etc.

Depending on the environment in which the radio is used, the VOX sensitivity level needs to be adjusted for optimal performance. Level 2 is recommended for most accessories. It is recommended that the VOX sensitivity for Lightweight D-Style Earsets be set to Level 3 for quiet environments and Level 5 for noisy environments. This is a radio-wide feature.

Hot Microphone Source

The Hot Microphone (Hot Mic) feature causes the radio to key up automatically for a predetermined amount of time during Remote Monitor and Emergency Alarm followed by Voice. The Hot Mic Source CPS/RM setting defines which microphone should become active (hot) during this predetermined transmission period.

Selection Behavior
Rear Accessory Radio uses the rear accessory microphone as the source of audio for the duration of the Hot Microphone (applicable to Mobile configuration only).
Front Accessory Radio uses the front accessory microphone as the source of audio for the duration of the Hot Microphone (applicable to Mobile configuration only).
Accessory Hot Mic feature uses the attached accessory microphone (portable radio).
Internal Hot Mic feature uses the internal microphone (portable radio).

This setting is only applicable to digital mode.
