Edge Node
The Motorola Edge Node is an on-premises, cloud-connected gateway server deployed at a customer site that bridges the local MOTOTRBO network with Motorola Solutions cloud services using the Motorola Gateway to LMR Network (MGLN) architecture. It consolidates core LMR middleware services such as MOTOTRBO Network Interface Service (MNIS), Device Discovery and Mobility Service (DDMS), and the MOTOTRBO Service Toolkit (MST) onto a single, self-managing hardware platform. This eliminates the need for separate standalone Windows servers for data gateways while enabling remote management, inventory monitoring, and automated cloud updates.[1]
The cloud services which use the Edge Node include:
- Orchestrate.
- MOTOTRBO Service Toolkit.
- Capacity Max care with Remote Monitoring
Operation
The Motorola Edge Node operates as a link between the local radio infrastructure and applications through the following architectural components:
- The Edge Node hosts containerized software modules that translate binary MOTOTRBO radio protocols into unified, cloud-friendly APIs. Services running on the node include:
- Data MNIS: Acts as the IP data gateway connecting to repeaters over the network to send and receive text messages, location data, and OTAP jobs.
- DDMS (Presence and Mobility): Registers Automatic Registration Service (ARS) messages from subscriber units to track real-time online/offline presence and channel mobility.
- Text Messaging Service and Outdoor Location: Handles wireline text messaging and GPS location requests between radios and mapping/dispatch applications.
- MOTOTRBO Service Toolkit (MST): Allows authorized partners to view system hardware/software inventory and remotely execute system upgrades on Capacity Max System Servers (CMSS).
- An Edge Node is sold as a fully functional appliance that uses enterprise-grade 1U rackmount server hardware. To ensure high availability, the Edge Node has dual hot-swappable power supplies, RAID-1 mirrored hard drives, and dual 1 Gb Ethernet NICs.
- The Edge Node is a self-managed appliance. Upon initial connection to the Internet, it automatically downloads its assigned application containers and operating system updates (Shared Scalable Platform / CMEP) in the background via the Cloud Software Hub without requiring manual IT maintenance.
- System administrators configure and monitor the device remotely through the Edge Node Management Portal (within CommandCentral Admin / CCAdmin). The node is onboarded and attached to an MGLN system using its unique Logical Serial Number (LSNNO) printed on the chassis label.
Additional Information
Never attempt to restart or power-cycle an Edge Node by cutting power or holding down the power button for a hard reset, as this can corrupt the containerized filesystem. Always perform a graceful shutdown via a short press of the power button or through the administrative portal commands.
It is not possible to install the required software on one's own server. An Edge Node is sold as a fully functional appliance requiring no software installation.
A system must use either the standalone Windows-based MNIS/DDMS or Edge Node-based consolidated MNIS/DDMS - a combination of both within the same system is not supported.
Over-The-Air IMPRES Battery Fleet Management (BFM) is only supported on a standalone Windows-based MNIS deployment. The Edge Node does not support this application.
