List of Capacity Max upgrade packages
Radio and Repeater Firmware
In order for the fixed infrastructure components to function correctly, the firmware version in the repeaters should be on the same release as the CMSS. CMSS software releases and repeater firmware are tested for backwards compatibility but only up to two major releases and only for voice features.
The radio firmware version is not that critical since there is no physical connection between them and the fixed infrastructure components. However, some system features are dependant on radio functionality (e.g. USBD LIP) and therefore a radio firmware upgrade is required in some cases.
Capacity Max System Server (CMSS) Upgrade Packages
The files required to upgrade a Capacity Max System Server (CMSS) is made available via a download link on MyView.
Each upgrade must be carried in sequence. For example, to upgrade a CMSS from R2.6 to R2.10, it must be first upgraded to R2.7; R2.8 and R2.9.
Even though the files can be downloaded from MyView, there are some cases where software licenses are required. These are delivered by email and an email address must be provided when placing the order.
As of 2024, the physical delivery option for these files is no longer available.[1] [2]

Notes
- ↑ Capacity Max was introduced with R2.6.
- ↑ The required files are available as a download from Motorola Online and/or MyView.
- ↑ Upgrade to previous version first. For example, in order to upgrade a CMSS currently on M2021.01, to M2021.04, it must be upgraded to M2021.02 first.
- ↑ If upgrading by more than one release or more than one CMSS, only one T8483B or T8486B needs to be ordered per upgrade PC. This will almost always be the latest version of the ESU Launchpad. Prior to M2020.01, ESU Launchpad was not required and the upgrade could be carried out using the x.x.x.3/ui web user interface. ESU Launchpad requires that Virtualisation Technology (VT) is enabled in the hosts UEFI/BIOS.
- ↑ ESU Launchpad is not needed when upgrading from M2023.01 to M2024.01. In this case, use the ESU CM and procedure described in MN003506A01-AY.
- ↑ It is possible to upgrade from M2022.01 or M2022.03 to M2023.01.
Upgrade Examples
R2.6 to M2024.01
To upgrade a CMSS on R2.6 to M2024.01 with online delivery, order the following items:
- T8486B (one per upgrade PC).
- T8481A
- T8734A
- T8766A
- T8814A
- T8831A
- T8854A
- T8879A
With the exception of T8486B, the quantity for each of the above items is one.
One T8486B is required per computer used to carry out the upgrade work.
It is possible to upgrade from M2022.03 to M2024.01 (or later) without having to upgrade to the intermediate version first.
The upgrade packages required to upgrade from R2.6 to R2.7;R2.7 to R2.8 and from R2.8 to R2.9 can be downloaded from Myview. The same is true for the M2024.01 upgrade package.
M2022.01 to M2024.01
To upgrade a CMSS on M2022.01 to M2024.01 with online delivery, order the following items:
- T8486B (one per upgrade PC).
- T8879A
One T8486B is required per computer used to carry out the upgrade work.
Since it is possible to upgrade from M2022.03 to M2024.01 (or later) without having to upgrade to the intermediate versions first, only T8879 needs to be ordered.
The upgrade package required for M2024.01 can be downloaded from Myview.
Capacity Max System Servers running ESXi V5.x[4]
If the CMSS to be upgraded is not running ESXi6.x, you will need to order one T8482A (physical) or one T8481A (online) per CMSS. The latter item requires an email address to send the license key. If ordering the former, the licence key comes on a CD.
Both items also require the customer to provide the Motorola physical serial number of the CMSS. This is is a ten digit alphanumeric string, printed on a label that is affixed to the top cover and starts with 435. The serial number is required for validation. Note that this is not the HPE serial number on the pullout card or on the ILO page.
To determine what version of ESXi is on the CMSS, either:
a) Connect a monitor to the video port of the CMSS. The ESXI version should be displayed with no input required. This requires the technician to be on site and have access to a monitor (or KVM) and power.
b) Or connect a PC to the CMSS network and go to https://x.x.x.2 using a web browser (x.x.x.0 refers to the CMSS IP subnet). The standard IP plan has this subnet as either 172.20.36.0 (pre R2.7) or 172.21.0.0 (post-R2.7). The current ESXi version will be displayed somewhere on the page.
Upgrade Procedure
Upgrading a Capacity Max system involves the following steps:
- Upgrade Radio Management.
- Upgrade the RM configuration of the Trunking Controller.
- Upgrade and configure each CMSS that contains a Trunking Controller. If needed, back up System Advisor data on the CMSS and restore after the upgrade.
- Upgrade each CMSS that does not contain a Trunking Controller (usually these only host the additional VRC gateways).
- Upgrade each MNIS Data Gateway.
- Upgrade the RF sites (repeaters).
- Update any Voice Applications if needed
- Update any Data Applications if needed.
- Update any Subscriber Radios if needed.
The above is covered in detail in the Capacity Max System Upgrade MN003506A01-AY.
